It wouldn’t be summer if I didn’t share with you some of my gardening exploits. I spent last summer moving and am not quite settled in my new place yet so I have not built my raised garden beds yet. That is what is so beautiful about the tower garden. It’s portable.
It’s portable as long as you don’t have anything planted yet. But I did get it set up and ready to go in April. I even had seedlings that I had ready to go after the first frost which is suppose to be April 15th. So here’s the bad news, none of my seedlings transitioned from the window inside to the tower garden outside. I accepted my losses quickly and planted my seeds directly into the tower.
They did great and I have a healthy jungle of green vines and plants growing from the tower. Of course, the only harvest I have had so far is gourmet lettuce and cucumbers. As July comes to an end, I must say I am pretty tired of cucumber salads, cucumber sandwiches, and cucumbers, in general. What I want to know is what happened to my tomatoes? I have many little green tomatoes but they have been on the vine and green for over a month.
All is not lost, I have learned a lot about tower gardening that is going to help in the future. This year I learned to use trellises and garden netting for the vines. I learned to plant my green peppers near the top so the huge leaves of the cucumbers don’t overshadow them. And thanks to a very helpful group on facebook, I learned I can use much less water if I trim back the roots. They have also told me that my tomatoes will ripen on the vine but it takes longer because of the heat and I should put frozen water bottles in the tank to cool off the water.
Not only is it wonderful to walk out your door and pick your own vegetables for dinner, there is something deeply spiritual about gardening. I have a feeling it has something to do with our first assignment on earth. “The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it (Gen 2:15).” I have so much enjoyed watching these seeds explode into this jungle of green. Then to watch them flower and bear fruit. I even had one surprise plant that had a purple flower blossom on it. I wondered if I had planted it or if a weed had accidentally gotten in with my seeds. Then one day I went out to inspect the additional purple flowers blooming and there was a half grown eggplant.
I love to watch over and tend this garden. I hope you have the opportunity to watch a garden grow and enjoy this spiritual connection to our very first purpose on earth, watching over and tending to the Garden of Eden.
Awesome!!
