I love how the much needed sunshine, fresh air, and movement has boosted my energy and brought an unexpected wave of joy into my heart and soul. If you’re still feeling drained, sluggish, or stuck in a rut and you’re not sure how to get your energy back, getting outside is one of the simplest, most powerful ways to start feeling like yourself again. The good news is, it doesn’t take much.
Here are few ways that a daily dose of sunshine can help you take your healthy back:
1. Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin
One of the most well-known benefits of sunlight is its role in vitamin D production. When your skin is exposed to the sun, it synthesizes vitamin D, which is essential for:
- Bone health – It helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
- Immune function – Vitamin D strengthens your immune system, helping to fight off infections and illnesses.
- Mood regulation – Low levels of vitamin D are linked to depression and fatigue. Sun exposure can naturally lift your mood and energy levels.
Even just 10–30 minutes of sun exposure a day (depending on skin type and location) can help maintain healthy vitamin D levels.
2. Boosts Mood and Mental Well-being
Sunlight is a natural mood enhancer. Exposure to sunlight increases serotonin production, often called the “happy hormone.” Higher serotonin levels help:
- Reduce the risk of depression and anxiety
- Improve focus and mental clarity
- Promote a sense of well-being and relaxation
This is one reason why people often feel happier and more energized on sunny days. If you find yourself feeling sluggish or down in the winter, there’s a good chance it has to do with shorter days and less sunshine. I am pretty sure it is why I feel a little manic in the spring when I have the opportunity to step outside more often.
3. Regulates Sleep Patterns
Your body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm, is strongly influenced by natural light. Sun exposure in the morning helps regulate melatonin production, the hormone responsible for sleep. By getting sunlight early in the day, you:
- Improve your ability to fall asleep at night
- Enhance sleep quality and duration
- Reduce the risk of sleep disorders like insomnia
It’s crazy how long, dark, nights make it harder to sleep. But I have fought insomnia all winter. Laying awake in the middle of the night waiting to fall asleep. Then spring comes and voila, slept through the night. I thought I was just tired from hiking but it could be I am getting more exposure to sunlight.
4. Supports Heart Health
Sun gets a bad rap for diseases linked to over exposure. But what you may not have heard about are all the benefits of the right doses of sunshine. Sun exposure has been shown to lower blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health. When sunlight hits the skin, it helps produce nitric oxide, a compound that relaxes blood vessels and improves circulation. With a daily dose of sunshine, you can:
- Reduce your risk of heart disease
- Lower high blood pressure
- Improve your overall blood flow
Even reading a book on your deck can support heart health and reduce stress. Make it a daily practice to expose your skin to sunlight every day, if possible.
5. Encourages Physical Activity
When you step outside, you’re more likely to move—whether it’s walking, hiking, stretching, or simply playing with your dog. Being in the sun encourages physical activity, which benefits:
- Joint and muscle health
- Weight management
- Overall fitness and longevity
Combining moving with sunshine, like a daily walk or outdoor yoga session, can powerpack your time in the sun with the added benefits you’ll get from movement.
6. Enhances Skin Health (In Moderation)
While excessive sun exposure can lead to skin damage, small amounts of daily sunlight can help with certain skin conditions like:
- Psoriasis
- Eczema
- Acne
Just remember to balance sun exposure and protect your skin if you’re outside for extended periods. Then you can enjoy that healthy glow.
One Step at a Time
Getting outside daily doesn’t have to be complicated. Try:
- Drinking your morning coffee on the porch
- Taking a walk during lunch
- Spending a few minutes in the garden
- Stretching or meditating in the sun
The sun is one of the simplest and most natural ways to support your health. So step outside, soak it in, and let nature do its magic!
